Bridging the Gap between IT and Facilities

Understanding how IT and Facilities must play together for Service Management success!

itSMF Southern AlbertaMission-critical environments are hybrid entities, often driven by opposing technological, financial and physical demands of both Information Technology (IT) and Facilities.

IT and Facilities are two distinct disciplines. The virtual IT world is digital and dynamic.

Rapid advances create a highly competitive environment of constant change where system capabilities and requirements expand exponentially. Equipment obsolescence is assumed.

Facilities, on the other hand, is a world where physical laws rule. While technology has increased control over these systems, fundamental physical principals remain fixed. It’s a tangible, hands-on world where forces of nature refuse to bow to market trends or corporate mandates.

Not surprisingly, these two professions have their own language, sometimes seemingly conflicting objectives and very distinct perspectives. Yet success depends on the ability of both IT and Facilities teams to communicate, establish realistic goals and appreciate each other’s needs and concerns.

This session will provide insights on:

  • Where are the GAPS’s between IT & Facilities?
    • The “Timeframe” GAP
    • The “Information” GAP
    • The “Hand Off” GAP
  • Why it’s critical to get IT at the table when data centre design decisions are being made.
  • The importance of clear role definition and a clear demark point between IT & Facilities.
